French Fry Tales
Not In The Back

So they’ve suddenly taken me off of my morning shifts and put me into afternoon shifts. Huzzah! I’m not a morning person.

I figured part of this reason was because I can’t do dishes when I’m in the back, because the reaction I get. Why it took them four months to do this, I don’t know.

Anyways…

So this past Monday was when I started with the afternoon shift (which would have been great if it wasn’t for our head manager coming in when she wasn’t suppose to and making everyone high strung), and they do put me on front counter.

But I was apparently scheduled for back drive, but the managers on duty are like “…Okay that’s stupid, put FFT up front and we’ll put someone else in the back.”

So yah…I’ve even talked to the guy doing our schedules about this before. He’s even SEEN my hands when I’ve had that breakout. They’re not fun looking.

I don’t even know what’s happening…

Schedule Change

For the past…while now, months, I’ve been working the same shift during the week. In the same place.

Ugh.

Anyways, it’s been mostly routine for me, and I haven’t even needed to write down my schedule because it’s always the same. But lo! I check my schedule for next week…and it’s different.

I’m moving from morning shifts to afternoon shifts.

Which is nice, since even after all this time I’m still not adjusted to waking up in the morning. I’m just not naturally a morning person.

So if this sticks it’ll probably help me with my sleep…

It also means now I get to mostly avoid the annoying manager and one coworker I have I usually work with in the mornings…

No idea if it’ll stick though.

Probably will depend on how well the people they’ll be putting where I was are at prep.

Rage Against Inefficieny

I don’t tend to make waves at work. I just do my job, nod my head, and only complain to other employees and stuff about things that we all relate to, like a customer being a jerk or idiot, and small annoying things they make us do.

But I find I have a really hard time keeping my mouth shut when I’m told I need to do something in an inefficient manner.

Take for instance, our prep in the morning, which includes making salads and parfaits. Usually we keep some empty salad bowls and covers, along with parfait cups and lids at the table in the back where we make them.

This makes it simple and easy to get them, especially when we’re doing only parts at a time between orders, because they only have a dedicated prep person if it gets to like ten and there’s still a ton to do. Or if the person in back drive, usually me, says “It’s way to busy, I’m not going to be able to get prep done before lunch.”

But every now and then they get on our case about keeping that stuff there. They say it doesn’t belong there and we’re suppose to keep everything in the back…In a place really annoying to get to if you’re also having to take orders in back drive. You simply don’t have time to get what you need there exactly and/or put stuff back, unless it’s really slow.

When this occasionally happens I do point this out, but they just say “Well we have to do it.”

So I just sigh, nod, and say “I’ll handle it when I have the time then.”

And then I never have the time.

And if I do, I make sure I have something else to do to make sure I don’t.

Then sooner or later, they drop the issue.

Evaluations

So apparently every year we’re suppose to be evaluated. Our head manager sits down with each employee and talks about what they need to improve on, what they’re doing well, and what their raise will be and why.

I’m now approaching my third year at McDonalds, and I’ve gotten two raises so far, both ten cents, which is pretty much the highest they give us employees. :/

Anyways, I never knew we were evaluated. It’s never happened to me, and it came as a complete surprise that it was suppose to happen, when a manager mentioned it to me and another coworker when we were on break.

Other employees have gotten their evaluation. I haven’t.

So either they’re being idiots and just completely forgetting about doing that for me, or I’m a fucking perfect employee.

Pretty sure I know which one it is.

Ten Dollars in Quarters

If you’re going to pay for a ten dollar order in all quarters, you are an asshole.

I’m not going to apologize.

Because you are.

That, or you’re a small child.

But considering you were driving and had a beard, I’m pretty sure you aren’t.

So you’re an asshole.

If you do this in back drive, you’re not only an asshole, you’re an asshat.

Coffee and Transition

We’re switching into lunch. Standard procedure for this is to stop brewing tons of coffee (as coffee orders pretty much drop off once we get into lunch), and bring the extra pots into the back once they’re empty, and just keep a single pot of regular coffee, and a single pot of decaf coffee.

We do this all the time. It’s standard. So we do this.

Fifteen minutes later, once we’re into lunch, the manager up front needs to head unto her break. So another manager takes over.

We suddenly get a few coffee orders up front, and the manager proceeds to freak the fuck out. It is literally four small coffees between the customers we get. We have it ready to brew. They’ll just have to wait a couple minutes, that’s all. But this manager…

She was yelling at us and berating us for doing our jobs. If we hadn’t gotten those orders, and had kept the pots up, she’d be screaming at us for wasting coffee.

But she gets that other pot, and we get out the coffee orders…and now we have two pots of coffee up front for regular coffee. One of which is still a third full…

Sigh…

Not The Best

So I get my ten late (as per usual). I had rushed out of the house this morning so I didn’t grab my usual fruit to munch on my ten.

I need something to eat, so I decide to order a couple strawberry and cream pies, because they are delicious.

One of my coworkers is taking orders. There is one person in front of me. And another person off to the side waiting for his food.

He then proceeds to have a conversation with the customer waiting for his food. And takes two orders out into lobby to hand to people. Not people who have trouble moving or getting up. Perfectly able bodied people. I know this, because they are regulars so I’ve seen often when I am up front.

He takes FOREVER to actually take the customer’s order in front of me (thankfully another good natured regular), and then wanders off for another two minutes getting an different order out instead of taking my order, despite the fact he knows I’m on a ten.

It’s just…UGH. Do you’re goddamn job! Front counter can be annoying even if you’re running for yourself, but it’s not hard! You shouldn’t have to take three minutes getting out an order that’s three small items! If you’re waiting on grill, you then take more orders not dick around and do other things!

I want to be able to sit down and unwind a little on my ten. Not spending it waiting for most of it and having to eat my food at the last minute.

At that point I didn’t even care, and took a longer break once I FINALLY got my two pies.

It literally took my coworker almost six minutes to take two orders (one being my two pies, another being a single, small coffee), and hand out that food, plus two burritos and a hash brown.

And he had the audacity, to say to a manager who told him that he needed to hurry up, that “hey, I’m the fastest guy you have up front.”

A coworker in grill heard that as well, looked up to me to see me waiting still, and just slowly shook his head, sympathizing with me.

Thankfully the manager on duty didn’t say anything to me when I came back from my break. They knew perfectly well why.

Animation

So a while back I mentioned that if I got 175 followers, I’d work on an animation for the blog. As of writing this, I now have 193.

Since it’s summer, I have some time now to do something like that. I’ll be looking into what sort of thing I want to do (probably something relatively short and simple at first), but I’ll at least produce an animatic to show everyone. I’m not the best of drawers, but I hope it’ll be good enough.

As it is, I am considering turning one of my old posts into some kind of animation. I am willing to take suggestions, and I might compile some and put it to a vote, as well.

Missing Regular

We had this one regular who always comes into drive thru, always gets the same thing, and is…not the nicest of guys. He gets huffy when someone takes more then a couple of seconds to input his order (which takes some time because we have to substitute stuff on his sandwich to keep our inventory right), and never, ever acknowledges us.

I’ve noticed I haven’t seen him in a couple weeks.

He was a regular I really didn’t like. He wasn’t outright hostile, just extremely rude and annoying, but I certainly don’t miss him coming around.

Also, that creeper I’ve mentioned before seems to have stopped showing up. No idea if he’s hounding the girl who does back drive in the morning when I’m not there though. I certainly hope he isn’t.
